Caring for Wildlife at Tranquility Hideaway
Nestled between the Coral Sea and the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest, Tranquillity Hideaway is more than a place of retreat—it’s a living example of what it means to coexist harmoniously with nature. One of our foundational pillars, Ecosystem & Biodiversity, is brought to life through our committed approach to wildlife maintenance.
Preserving and enhancing local biodiversity is not simply a value at Tranquillity—it’s a practice embedded into every corner of the eco-precinct. From habitat corridors to responsible land management, we’ve designed this space to be a sanctuary for the animals who were here long before us.
A Living Sanctuary for Local Species
Tranquillity Hideaway lies within a biodiversity hotspot rich with iconic species such as the endangered Southern Cassowary, tree kangaroos, sugar gliders, and vibrant Ulysses butterflies. Maintaining a safe environment for these creatures is a daily responsibility. To do this, we carefully preserve native flora, which forms the backbone of these species’ habitats and food sources.
Our landscaping is entirely native and non-invasive, intentionally supporting pollinators and frugivores alike. This commitment helps regenerate the natural food web and reduces competition from introduced species. We also seek chemical alternatives for weed and pest control to encourage natural regeneration and to support a healthy habitat and strong biodiversity across the property.
Wildlife Corridors and Habitat Connectivity
A crucial part of wildlife maintenance is ensuring animals can move freely and safely through their natural range. At Tranquility, we’ve regenerated old open farm paddocks into parklands, providing connection to established wildlife corridors that allow animals and humans alike uninterrupted access to the surrounding rainforest and wetlands. Established pathways ensure that our guests and the local animals that live on the property can coexist without interference.
To ensure our property feels as natural as possible for the animals that live here, we have removed all internal fencing so that our property is essentially a corridor from where our property meets the World Heritage-listed rainforest at the rear all the way down to the beachfront at the front.
For example, the cassowary requires large, uninterrupted tracts of land to find food and mates. Our corridors provide a secure route that allows this critical seed disperser to move safely through the property and up into the rainforest behind us.
Supporting Nocturnal and Arboreal Creatures
Recognising that many of our native species are active at night or live in trees, we’ve taken extra steps to accommodate their needs. Artificial lighting is minimised throughout Tranquility to reduce light pollution, which can disrupt natural behaviours such as feeding, mating, and navigation.
We are also exploring the idea of adding nesting boxes at various heights to support sugar gliders, birds, and native bees. We will also be implementing signage across the property that will identify old-growth trees to provide education and to ensure that these old individuals are never unnecessarily or mistakenly removed.
Ethical Human-Wildlife Interactions
At Tranquility, we educate residents and guests about respectful ways to share space with wildlife. There is a strict no-feeding policy to prevent dependency and diet-related health issues.
We also encourage guests to participate in citizen science by recording animal sightings, which helps us track population health and movement patterns. Through these efforts, everyone becomes part of the stewardship.
Partnering with Conservation Organisations
We encourage close relationships with local conservation groups and wildlife carers, offering our land as a research and rehabilitation partner. Injured wildlife can be released into our protected bushland after recovery, thanks to its proximity to natural habitat and absence of domestic animals.
We’re particularly proud to work alongside cassowary rescue groups to help monitor nesting sites, collect data on juvenile dispersal, and advocate for regional corridor protection.
A Living Model of Coexistence
Wildlife maintenance is not about control—it’s about coexistence, and we are trying to promote the fact that it is us that must learn to adapt and coexist with the animals. We are in their home, and just like when we visit someone else’s place, we are constantly learning how to respect the place that has long been their home.
At Tranquility Hideaway, our goal is to create conditions where we have enough space to move about the property while ensuring local wildlife can thrive without conflict or interference. This requires an ongoing commitment to ecological understanding, gentle land management, and community education.
By fostering this balance, we don’t just protect animals—we protect the ecosystems that support all life, including our own. If you ever visit Tranquility, you might just glimpse a cassowary at dawn or hear a sugar glider rustle through the canopy. These quiet encounters are reminders of what’s possible when humans live with intention.
We invite you to experience the tranquillity of true biodiversity stewardship and become part of a growing vision for ecological harmony.
