Living Plastic-Free at Tranquility Hideaway
At Tranquility Hideaway, sustainability is not a slogan—it’s a wise way to live. Part of this is our commitment to becoming a Plastic-Free Zone, a cornerstone of our Waste & Resource Management pillar. In a world overflowing with single-use packaging, we’ve chosen to chart a different path—one built on responsibility, reuse, and regenerative thinking.
We’re creating an environment where plastic is not only discouraged—it’s absent. This takes more than signage or good intentions. It takes planning, policy, and partnership. The result is a precinct that models how plastic-free living can be both practical and beautiful.
Our Goal – No Single-Use Plastics—Anywhere
Tranquility is striving to become a no single-use plastic site. This includes plastic bags, water bottles, food wrappers, straws, cling film, and disposable cups. When we’re done, you won’t find them here—not in our kitchens, not in our guest cabins, and not in any of our supply chains.
Instead, we will offer durable, compostable, and reusable alternatives across all departments. Water will be provided through rainwater tanks and refill stations. Cleaning products come in refillable glass bottles. Kitchen supplies will be stored in reusable containers, and our events will use fully compostable catering ware made from cornstarch, bamboo, or sugarcane pulp.
The policies we develop will apply not only to guests and residents but also to staff, volunteers, and visiting vendors. Every person on-site will become part of maintaining a shared commitment to zero waste.
Refillable and Compostable Systems
We’re designing every aspect of life at Tranquility to support waste-free living. In our kitchen and food prep zones, we will move to storing our dry goods in airtight glass or stainless-steel containers. Herbs, teas, and spices will be dispensed in bulk from refill stations. Cleaning products will be made in-house or purchased in concentrated form and distributed into reusable bottles.
Toiletries and personal care items will be provided in refillable dispensers. Our bathrooms will be stocked with eco-certified shampoo, soap, and conditioner in bulk pumps—no travel-size plastics, no waste.
Compostable materials will also be standard. Our takeaway options (when available) will use cellulose wraps and biodegradable containers that break down quickly in our on-site compost systems. Even packaging from vendors will need to meet our standards—no hidden plastics, no poly coatings, and no exceptions.
Partnering for Zero-Waste Supply
We believe that sustainability extends beyond our boundaries. That’s why as we develop our partnerships, we will only partner with vendors who share our values. Our suppliers will be vetted for their packaging practices.
Ideally, this will mean suppliers must deliver dry goods in paper sacks, glass jars, or returnable containers, waxed cardboard or reusable crates.
Over time, this policy will build a network of like-minded providers—from ethical grocers to eco-hospitality vendors—who are innovating with sustainable packaging and take-back programs.
The Hidden Impacts of Plastic
Plastic is cheap, convenient, and everywhere. But its true cost is incalculable: ocean pollution, microplastics in soil and food, and decades-long decomposition rates that poison wildlife and ecosystems.
Mission Beach, like many coastal areas, is already facing the consequences. Marine debris from tourism and shipping washes up regularly. By creating a plastic-free model, we’re taking a stand—not just for aesthetics or branding, but for the land and ocean that surround us.
Eliminating plastic also helps reduce our carbon footprint. Plastic production is fossil-fuel intensive. By removing it from our operations, we reduce our upstream emissions while encouraging circular economies.
Education and Empowerment
Going plastic-free can be challenging at first. That’s why we will make it easy to learn and participate. Clear signage helps guests sort waste and identify sustainable alternatives. In time, our team will share informal Q&A sessions and hands-on workshops showing how to shop, store, and cook plastic-free.
We are even exploring the idea of creating a “Plastic-Free Toolkit” for residents and longer-term visitors, which would include things like:
- Stainless steel drink bottles
- Wax wraps and mesh produce bags
- Compostable bin liners
- Recipes for natural cleaners and personal care
By giving people the tools and knowledge to reduce waste at home, we extend our impact far beyond the boundaries of Tranquility.
Leading with Integrity
Being plastic-free is not a trend for us—it’s a principle. It means sometimes saying no to convenience and sometimes paying more to do what’s right. But it also means integrity. It means creating a place where the physical environment reflects the values we hold.
This is about more than just avoiding litter. It’s about creating a cleaner, healthier, more resilient world—one where ecosystems thrive, communities are mindful, and every object we use has a purpose beyond the bin.
Join us in imagining a future without plastic—and in living that future today.
